FN America, LLC is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Prototype Project Opportunity Notice contract by the U.S. Army to further develop its submission for the Precision Grenadier System, a next-generation primary soldier weapon system and family of ammunition that enables precision engagements to destroy targets with increased lethality and precision compared to legacy grenade launchers. Their submission is the FN MTL-30.
The FN MTL-30 – New Shoulder Fired 30mm Grenade Launcher
The FN MTL-30 represents a step forward in infantry grenade launcher design. FN designed it to provide small units with a potent, accurate, and portable indirect-fire option. The launcher fires 30-millimeter medium-velocity grenades. That caliber offers a flatter trajectory than traditional low-velocity 40-millimeter rounds.
After extensive testing, FN’s solution has successfully met the DoD’s key performance criteria while also delivering desired characteristics. In addition, the FN solution is easily manufacturable and logistically supportable due to state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, ensuring the program will be cost-effective.

Increases First Round Hit Probability
It reduces arcing and improves first-round hit probability at intermediate ranges. The MTL-30 uses a semi-automatic action and a detachable box magazine. Users can choose between three- or five-round magazines. This feed system supports rapid follow-up shots without manual reloading.
Weight matters when adding capability to a soldier’s loadout. The MTL-30 weighs ten pounds unloaded. That weight keeps it lighter than many vehicle-mounted automatic launchers. It is easy to shoulder and maneuver for dismounted troops. The length and configuration are similar to those of a rifle. FN maintained the overall length at 34 inches to ensure natural balance.

Continuous Picatinny Rail
A continuous Picatinny rail at twelve o’clock accepts optics and sensors. That rail lets units mount red dots, magnified optics, or fire control units. The MTL-30’s effective range is an impressive five hundred meters. Medium-velocity ammunition retains lethal effect at that range.
Operators can engage point and area targets without immediate support. Ergonomics was also a factor in the design. FN designed the MTL-30 with a familiar rifle-style layout.

A conventional pistol grip and stock let users transition quickly. The controls remain intuitive for soldiers trained on modern rifles. Aiming and first-round hits benefit from ballistic tools.
