Let’s be real. Many personal self-defense weapons do work and can be highly effective, that is, if you carry them with you throughout your day. Most likely, they were toyed with when you purchased them and now, they are in a drawer at home and not even touched. This is not the way to stay safe. However, if you carry the Stealth Pen Pro from Atomic Bear, you get a smooth writing pen, plus many added extras. With a Stealth Pen Pro in my hand, I put it into action to see for myself if it steps up as a viable self-defense tool or is just another novelty destined to be discarded.

Stealth Pen Pro Overall Look & Feel

The pen came to me packed in a stylish slim box, along with two added extras, the BearGrip Magnetic Mount and a set of two plastic training tips. The pen, within my hand, was surprisingly lightweight (though that fact was advertised on their website) thanks to its polymer casing. The thickness of the pen was naturally beefier than your average pen, yet not too thick to be cumbersome in my hand or awkward to grip when in “writing” mode. The concave midpoint of the pen was perfectly designed for a comfortable hold on the pen. From an aesthetic perspective, the pen was stylish without being gaudy or exhibiting a novelty-like appearance. The pen fit perfectly and held tightly within my shirt pocket thanks to its prominent and easy-use clip.

Specs & Features

The Stealth Pen Pro is just under six-inches long and about a third-of-an-inch wide. Its outer casing is constructed of a highly durable polymer that gives it its lightweight feel and as stated, its unbreakable composition. The pen’s design offers a concave front half that allows for a comfortable grip when writing. Its base section features an integrated belt clip and removable silicone end cap that houses its tungsten carbide glass breaker.

The Stealth Pen’s front tip is serrated for premium self-defense applications and DNA collection when it breaks and collects the skin of an attacker. Seventy-five percent of the pen’s surface area is textured for excellent grip retention. About one-inch below the back end of the pen is a bolt-action mechanism for deploying the ink (with one-hand operation) and is slim enough not to not catch on clothing or hinder the pen’s use during a self-defense situation. Finally, the pen comes complete with a black color, P900 medium ink cartridge, and it is compatible with hundreds of other brands on the market today.

Techniques Attempted

Having experience with a kubaton (A Japanese, six-inch striking weapon), I used the Stealth Pen Pro in the same manner, simulating striking and nerve pinching techniques on my training partner. Naturally, its small size, like other kubatons, doesn’t allow it to be effective against large muscle mass. Rather, it’s a precision weapon that should target a person’s vital areas, such as their eyes, throat, and groin. Additionally, it can be pressed into the nerves under the skin to cause pain. I used it to dig into pressure points on my “foe’s” neck and bicep.

The solidness of the pen and its tapered tip was highly effective. I also used the Stealth Pen as a blunt striking weapon against my training partner’s aforementioned vital areas. Holding the Stealth Pen within my grip with the tip pointing downward. I parried the simulated attack and with a hammer fist-like strike drove the pen towards my partner’s face. The movement was smooth. I had no doubt if the simulation was a true, real-life scenario, the Pen would have delivered both pain and the distraction needed against my assailant.

Concealability & Daily Use

Though a bit brawnier than a traditional pen, the Stealth Pen Pro would have no trouble staying discreet within a shirt pocket or on your desk. I carried mine to work and it didn’t feel cumbersome or bulky in my dress shirt pocket. To the “Average Joe,” the appearance of the Stealth Pen Pro would simple be that of a thick pen, and most people I would guess, wouldn’t think it performed any function other than writing. As for its writing performance, it was smooth and consistent. I could use this pen daily and with its replaceable ink cartridge ability, it could truly last for years.

To Carry Or Not To Carry?

After my use of the Stealth Pen Pro, I can confidently say that this pen is amazing. Being versed in the martial arts, it definitely can step up as an aid for self-defense. However, I would advise that anyone who wants to use it to its maximum potential should seek out self-defenseinstruction. Like any personal safety weapon, repeated use until the weapon feels comfortable and natural is vital when a real-life self-defense scenario occurs. What makes this discreet weapon preferred over others is its ability to be carried out-in-the-open during your daily life. A weapon is only valuable if it’s in-hand and accessible, and the Stealth Pen Pro exemplifies this perfectly.
